Background

Over the past 30 years, energy consumption in Swedish homes has doubled. The change in lifestyles accounts for much of this increase. Use of technology products and services such as computers, music players, DVD/VCR players, TVs and telephones has increased. Many of these products are never switched off, but are left in standby mode when not in use. To buck this trend, everyone needs a helping hand to change their behaviour and make more efficient use of energy. Today’s young people are a particularly important target group in this process. If they can change the way they behave, they can also – as future decision makers and energy researchers – help ensure that society at large makes the right choices when it comes to energy use.

A number of studies have shown that young people are unaware of which domestic activities are energy-intensive. There is therefore good reason to find new ways of informing and enthusing young people, and methods of influencing behaviour that may contribute to sustainable development.
